Thousands Mourn IDF Reservist Tamir Vaknin Killed in South Lebanon Clash

Thousands of residents from Eilat, along with family and friends, attended the funeral of Lieutenant Colonel (res.) Tamir Vaknin, a 33-year-old soldier from Battalion 2855 of Brigade 55, who was killed in combat in southern Lebanon. His father, Shimon Vaknin, tearfully bid farewell, expressing his grief over burying his son instead of accompanying him to his wedding. He revealed that Tamir had not told him about entering Lebanon to avoid causing worry.

Tamir Vaknin died alongside Lieutenant Colonel (res.) Harel Birnstok in an explosion caused by an improvised explosive device during an operational activity in the village of Majdal Zun in southern Lebanon. Four other reservist soldiers from the same battalion were injured and evacuated to Rambam Hospital for treatment. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are investigating the circumstances of the incident, including when the explosive was placed and whether Hezbollah militants triggered it.

In response to the ceasefire violation by the terrorist organization, the IDF struck terror infrastructure in the area, targeting weapons warehouses and operational apartments. Shimon Vaknin shared his emotional farewell, recalling his last call with his son and urging him to watch over his comrades. He described his son as beloved by many and a hero whose service and sacrifice protect the nation.
