Reserve Lieutenant Colonel Tamir Vaknin Dies in South Lebanon Blast, Remembered as Hero

Tamir Vaknin, a reserve lieutenant colonel in the Israeli Defense Forces, was killed in a blast caused by a booby-trapped building in Majdal Zun, South Lebanon, during a military operation on Thursday around noon. Vaknin and fellow reservist Lt. Col. Harel Birnstok died while securing engineering work inside the village, which lies within the Israeli security zone. The incident occurred amid ongoing tensions, with Israel accusing Hezbollah of violating a ceasefire and responding with strikes in southern Lebanon.

Vaknin’s brother, Yoav Vaknin, paid tribute to him on the Kan News radio program, describing Tamir as a "big-hearted hero and warrior of the land." Yoav recalled Tamir’s dedication to reserve duty since October 7, despite the toll it took on his career and personal life. Tamir often refused to skip reserve service, saying he could not abandon his comrades. Their last conversation included Tamir humorously showing his room in Lebanon, which Yoav said looked better than his Tel Aviv apartment.

Tamir’s cousin, Tomer, added that Tamir had been on the front lines for three years and was always first to volunteer. Though he worked in cybersecurity and lived in Tel Aviv, Eilat was his true home. He was remembered as a lighthearted person who loved life. The military continues to investigate the circumstances of the explosion, which involved a booby-trapped structure inside the village.

This incident highlights the fragile security situation in southern Lebanon, where Israeli forces operate within a designated security zone and face threats from Hezbollah. The IDF has recently launched unusual strikes in response to ceasefire violations, including a drone attack by Hezbollah targeting Israeli troops.
