Israeli Combat Medic Tamir Vaknin Killed in Lebanon Bombing, Thousands Attend Funeral in Eilat

Lieutenant Colonel Tamir Vaknin, a combat medic in the Paratroopers Brigade, was killed on Thursday during a bomb explosion while clearing a booby-trapped building in Majdal Zoun, southern Lebanon. Thousands attended his funeral at the military cemetery in Eilat. Vaknin's brother Yoav mourned him, saying, "Losing you leaves a huge hole in my heart that will never be filled." Their father Shimon recalled Vaknin's close bonds with fellow soldiers and his dedication, expressing sorrow over not being able to accompany him to his wedding. The mayor of Eilat, Eli Lankri, praised Vaknin as one of the city's finest, highlighting his commitment to reserve duty since October 7.

On the same day, retired Lieutenant Colonel Harel Birnstok was also laid to rest at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. Birnstok's wife, Elia, emotionally pledged to raise their children with joy despite her grief. His family described him as a vibrant and beloved leader who inspired those around him.

The incident occurred around noon during an ongoing operation to clear the village of Majdal Zoun, located in the western sector of the security zone under Israeli control. Initially, a report indicated a bulldozer triggered an explosive device, but it was later clarified that the force was scanning a booby-trapped building. Four other soldiers were injured and evacuated to Rambam Hospital in Haifa.

In response to the bombing, the IDF launched targeted strikes on Hezbollah infrastructure in southern Lebanon, including weapons depots and operational apartments. The military spokesperson stated the attacks were in retaliation for Hezbollah's blatant ceasefire violations. The strikes continued overnight, with reports of air and drone attacks near Tyre and artillery fire in the Ali al-Taher ridge area. Lebanese media affiliated with Hezbollah reported multiple airstrikes and evacuations of casualties.

The IDF discovered a large underground Hezbollah facility and drone base in Majdal Zoun during the recent conflict, known as "The Fortress," which served as a key staging area for Iranian-made UAVs and explosives. Israeli forces continue to clear the area to locate additional weapons and secure the zone. Political leadership, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is reportedly considering a stronger military response following these events.
