Yair Golan Petitions High Court Over Lack of Security Amidst Death Threats

Yair Golan, leader of the Democrats party, has filed a petition with the High Court of Justice (Bagatz) citing dozens of death threats against him and demanding immediate security protection. The petition argues that despite his threat level being assessed as 4 out of 6, no security detail has been assigned. This legal action comes less than a month before the upcoming Knesset elections.

The Democrats party highlighted specific threats Golan has received on social media, including calls for his physical harm and that of his family, such as "Why don't they eliminate Yair Golan" and "A person like this shouldn't be in politics, only a hangman's noose." The petition also notes that Golan's name appeared in a threatening letter sent after a brick was thrown at Channel 12 news studios, and he was the only party leader named in it.

The party contends that the absence of security hinders Golan's ability to conduct public campaign activities, arguing that a candidate facing threats to their life is at a disadvantage compared to others. They assert that harming a candidate due to their political views during an election period constitutes an attack on the electoral process itself.

The Democrats stated, "We will not sit idly by while they plan the next political assassination. We demand the High Court intervene immediately, before it's too late." The petition, submitted by attorney Omri Segev, details explicit and documented threats, including calls for murder, hanging, and the use of firearms, noting that Golan's threat level is reportedly the same as that assigned to former IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot.
