Democrats Sue for State Protection for Leader Amid Death Threats

The Democratic Party has filed a petition with the Supreme Court demanding that security services provide state protection for their leader, Yair Golan. The move comes in response to dozens of specific death threats against the former general ahead of the general elections.

Party representatives stated that the situation has reached a critical point, necessitating immediate judicial intervention to prevent potential attacks on politicians. The lawsuit, filed against the head of the Shin Bet, David Zini, and the government, highlights a discrepancy in risk assessment. According to the party, while the police have assessed the threat level against Golan as high, personal security has not yet been provided, unlike other political figures with similar risk levels.

The political movement accused the relevant government committee of delaying decision-making and exhibiting bias. The petitioners emphasized that restrictions on Golan's public appearances due to threats to his life undermine the integrity and security of the electoral process.

As neither Yair Golan nor other opposition leaders are currently members of the Knesset, they do not automatically receive the security detail afforded to sitting parliamentarians. Supporters of the party are urging an urgent review of security measures in light of the current circumstances.
