Democrats Party Threatens High Court Action Over Yair Golan's Security

The Democratic Party has threatened to petition Israel's Supreme Court if Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar does not order security for party leader Yair Golan within four days. This comes nearly two weeks after a ministerial committee recommended that Bar decide on the security arrangements for party leaders who are not ministers or Knesset members, including Golan, Gadi Eisenkot, and Ofer Winter.

As of Wednesday, none of the three leaders have been assigned official security, and they continue to rely on private security firms. The police's threatened individuals unit assessed the threat level against Eisenkot and Golan as a 4 out of 6. The threat level against Golan has reportedly increased significantly in recent months, particularly after Prime Minister Netanyahu's wife, Sara Netanyahu, suggested Golan might have had prior knowledge of the October 7th attacks.

The Democratic Party's legal counsel sent a sharp letter to Bar detailing explicit threats against Golan found on social media. These included statements like "Yair Golan, we will take your eyes out. You and your family will be wiped out. Your sentence is hanging you and your family" and "Jews like Yair Golan should face a military trial and execution for treason."

The letter cited the Shin Bet's role in safeguarding democratic order according to law and warned that ignoring the threats and intelligence could endanger Golan's life. The party urged Bar to disregard political "background noise" and make a "proper state decision." If no response is received within four days, the party intends to file a petition with the Supreme Court to compel Bar to provide security for Golan due to the threats against him.
