Shin Bet Refuses Security for Threatened Democratic Party Leader Yair Golan Amid Rising Danger

Despite an increased threat level assessed by the police against Yair Golan, chairman of the Democratic Party, the Shin Bet continues to refuse providing him personal security, as reported by Kan News on Wednesday. In response, the Democratic Party sent a letter to senior law enforcement officials, including Shin Bet chief David Zini, Police Commissioner Danni Levi, the Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara, and the chairman of the Central Elections Committee. The letter accuses Zini of knowingly neglecting Golan's safety and endangering his life, emphasizing that Golan is one of the most threatened political leaders in Israel.

The letter included explicit death threats against Golan, some posted on social media, and a threatening letter attached to a stone thrown at Channel 12 News offices. It criticized the Shin Bet for ignoring these dangers while providing unprecedented security to the Netanyahu family without clear criteria, highlighting a perceived political bias in security allocations. Knesset member Naama Lazimi from the Democratic Party told Kan News that Zini's refusal to approve security for Golan and other key political figures is politically motivated, contrasting it with lifetime security granted to Sara Netanyahu.

Lazimi further accused Zini of serving political interests rather than the state, referencing a private conversation where Zini allegedly promised Netanyahu security guarantees. The controversy underscores tensions over security provisions for politicians amid Israel's volatile political climate and rising threats against opposition leaders. The Democratic Party continues to demand immediate protective measures for Golan as the security debate intensifies.
