Democrats Party Petitions Supreme Court for Yair Golan Security

The Israeli political party 'HaDemocratim' (The Democrats) has filed an urgent petition with the Supreme Court of Justice (Bagatz), demanding that the head of the Shin Bet security agency, David Zini, and the Israeli government immediately provide security for party chairman Yair Golan. The petition, filed less than a month before the upcoming elections, argues that Golan remains unprotected despite the police classifying the threat level against him as high.

The Democrats' legal counsel stated in the petition that Golan is exposed to dozens of explicit and chilling assassination threats, and that each day without security leaves him vulnerable. The party is seeking an interim order and an urgent hearing due to the severity of the threats and the proximity to the Knesset elections.

The petition reveals that while the Israeli Police raised Golan's risk level to 4 out of 6, the same level assigned to Gadi Eisenkot, Golan is the only party leader not to have been approved for security. Attached to the petition are documents detailing specific threats, including wishes for his death, threats of violence against him and his family, and calls for his assassination.

Furthermore, the petition notes that a recent incident involving a brick thrown at Channel 12 studios, accompanied by a death threat letter, included Golan's name as a target. The party asserts that securing Golan is central to the Shin Bet's mission, as a candidate unable to appear in public without risking his life is severely limited in campaigning, which constitutes an attack on the election process itself.

A statement from The Democrats declared, "We will not sit idly by while they plan the next political assassination. We demand that the Supreme Court intervene immediately, before it is too late."
