Democrats Party Petitions Supreme Court for Immediate Security for Yair Golan

The Israeli political party 'HaDemocratim' (The Democrats) has filed an urgent petition with the Supreme Court, demanding immediate security protection for its chairman, Yair Golan. The party argues that Golan is exposed to numerous explicit threats of assassination and that leaving him without security renders him "target practice." The petition, filed by attorney Omri Segev, names Shin Bet Director David Zini and the Israeli government as respondents.

The Democrats contend that the Israel Police have classified Golan's risk level at 4 out of 6, the same high level assigned to Knesset member Gadi Eisenkot. However, unlike other candidates with similar risk assessments, Golan has not been granted security.

A supplementary document attached to the petition details direct threats against Golan published online and in public spaces, which the party describes as "a virtual blood libel." The petition also references a recent serious incident where a brick was thrown at the studios of Channel 12 News, accompanied by a death threat letter. Golan's name was listed in this letter as a primary target, and he was the only party leader included.

"The petitioner's security is at the core of the service's mission," the petition states. "A candidate who cannot appear in public without risking his life is limited in conducting his election campaign compared to candidates not under similar threat. An attack on a candidate due to his political views during an election period is an attack on the election process itself."

A statement from the Democrats party declared, "We will not sit idly by while they plan the next political assassination. We demand that the Supreme Court intervene immediately, before it is too late."
