Yair Golan Security Demanded by Democrats Party in High Court Petition

The "Democrats" party has filed an urgent petition with the High Court of Justice, demanding that the head of the Shin Bet security service, David Zini, and the Israeli government immediately provide security for party chairman Maj. Gen. (res.) Yair Golan. The petition was submitted less than a month before the upcoming elections, with the party asserting that Golan remains without security despite the Israel Police classifying the threat level against him as high.

The petition claims Golan is exposed to dozens of "concrete, explicit, and chilling" assassination threats, stating that "every day that passes without security leaves the petitioner as fodder for cannons." The party is requesting the High Court issue an interim order and hold an urgent hearing, citing the severity of the threats and the proximity of the Knesset elections.

The Democrats' legal counsel, Adv. Omri Segev, submitted the petition, which argues that although the Israel Police raised Golan's risk level to 4 out of 6, identical to that assigned to Gadi Eisenkot, only Golan has not been approved for security. The petition includes a document detailing alleged threats against Golan, such as statements like "Yair Golan, I wonder what blood he has in his veins... he should stand trial and then a bullet in the head," and "You are on your way, we will take your eyes out, you and your family will be wiped out... your sentence is hanging."

Furthermore, the petition notes that during a recent incident where a brick was thrown at Channel 12's news studios with a letter containing death threats, Golan's name was listed as a target. The party contends that Golan was the only party leader whose name appeared in that letter. The petition emphasizes that providing security for Golan is central to the Shin Bet's mission and that a candidate unable to appear in public without risking their life is limited in their ability to campaign, which constitutes an attack on the election process itself.

The Democrats stated, "We will not sit idly by while they plan the next political assassination. We demand the High Court intervene immediately, before it is too late."
