Democrats Petition Supreme Court for Security Detail for Yair Golan Amid Threats

The Democratic Party filed a petition with the Supreme Court of Israel on Tuesday, demanding that the head of the Shin Bet security agency, the Ministerial Committee on Shin Bet Affairs, and the Israeli government provide security for party chairman Yair Golan. The petition cites explicit threats against Golan's life and his family.

The party claims that Golan's risk level has been assessed as 4 out of 6, the same level as Gadi Eisenkot, yet he is not currently receiving state security. This is not the first time the party has raised this concern with the Shin Bet chief.

The petition includes several social media threats against Golan, such as calls for his execution and threats of violence against him and his family. One instance mentioned was a death threat letter that included Golan's name and was attached to a brick thrown at Channel 12 studios in July. The party asserts Golan was the only party leader named in that specific threat.

The Democrats previously approached the Shin Bet chief with a demand for security, setting a deadline before resorting to legal action. The petition notes that with the 26th Knesset elections scheduled for October 27, Golan continues to participate in public events and campaign activities without state protection.

The petitioners are requesting an interim order from the court for Golan's immediate security until a final decision is made, and they are seeking an urgent hearing. A statement from the Democratic Party declared, "We will not sit idly by while they plan the next political assassination. We demand the Supreme Court intervene immediately, before it is too late."
