Yair Golan to Petition High Court Over Denied Security Detail

Democratic Party chairman Yair Golan will petition Israel's High Court of Justice after a committee recommended against providing him with a security detail. The party announced its intention to appeal the decision, citing threats against Golan, including a video depicting a hand firing a gun alongside harsh statements against him. Golan stated in a recent interview that the police assess the threats against him and fellow former IDF General Gadi Eisenkot as identical.

The Democratic Party's CEO, Omer Lubaton Granot, previously appealed to the Chairman of the Central Elections Committee, Supreme Court Justice Noam Sohlberg, requesting he order the Shin Bet chief to provide Golan with security. This followed a police assessment that raised Golan's risk level to a high category. Lubaton Granot's letter highlighted severe statements made against Golan, including death wishes, accusations of being a "Nazi" and "traitor," and explicit calls for violence against him and his family, referencing remarks by Prime Minister Netanyahu's wife, Sara Netanyahu.

The party argues that the committee's decision to grant security to Eisenkot while denying it to Golan reveals purely political considerations. They believe providing Golan security would be an official acknowledgment that the "incitement campaign" led by Netanyahu and his associates poses a tangible threat to Golan's life.

"The responsibility for the safety and life of Major General (Res.) Yair Golan rests on Prime Minister Netanyahu and Shin Bet Chief David Zini," stated Lubaton Granot. "If politics are not separated from the duty to protect human life, we will petition the High Court without delay, demanding they be compelled to do so before the next political assassination occurs."
