Israeli Group Seeks to Disqualify Yair Golan and Others for Inciting IDF Refusal

The organization "Torat Lechima" has filed a petition with Judge Noam Solberg, chairman of the Israeli election committee, demanding the disqualification of four candidates from the Democratic list, including Yair Golan, Omri Ronen, Yaya Pink, and Nimrod Shafir. The petition accuses these candidates of inciting refusal to serve in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), citing documented statements made both before and during the recent conflict. The group alleges that these actions violate Section 7a of the Basic Law: The Knesset, which prohibits candidates who deny Israel's existence as a Jewish and democratic state or support armed struggle against it.

Torat Lechima further claims that two of the accused are IDF officers of general rank who have organized opposition within the military and against the democratically elected government. The petition asserts that their conduct has emboldened Hamas and Israel's enemies, causing significant harm to Israeli security and deterrence. Consequently, the organization urges the election committee to immediately bar these candidates from running, as well as any others who incite IDF refusal.

Yair Golan, chairman of the Democratic party, has previously made controversial remarks, including a May 2025 interview on Kan Reshet Bet where he criticized Israeli military actions against civilians, stating, "A sane state does not wage war against civilians, does not kill babies as a hobby, and does not set goals of population expulsion." This statement is part of the evidence cited by the petitioners.

The petition follows the recent Democratic primary results and reflects ongoing tensions in Israeli politics regarding military service and national security amid the current conflict.
