Renowned Kabbalist Rabbi David Shalom Biton Dies at 85

Rabbi David Shalom Biton, considered the preeminent Kabbalist of his generation and head of the 'HaShalom' Kabbalistic yeshiva in Jerusalem, passed away on the eve of the Sukkot holiday at the age of 85. He reportedly collapsed suddenly at his home in Bnei Brak and was rushed to the hospital after extensive resuscitation efforts, but ultimately succumbed to his condition. Rabbi Biton, who had experienced fluctuating health in recent years, was known for his dedication to teaching esoteric Jewish mysticism, offering counsel and blessings, and performing spiritual rectifications for individuals and the public.

His funeral procession began in Jerusalem and proceeded to the Sanhedria cemetery, drawing thousands of mourners, including prominent rabbis and community leaders. Born in Jerusalem in 1941, Rabbi Biton hailed from a distinguished lineage of Babylonian sages. His mother was a great-granddaughter of Rabbi Yosef Chaim, author of the "Ben Ish Chai," and the Kabbalist Rabbi Yehuda Petyah. He studied at the Porat Yosef Yeshiva in Jerusalem's Old City under Rabbi Ezra Attia and was influenced by other leading rabbis of his time.

Following his marriage to Rebbetzin Tzipora Biton, who passed away in 2020, he founded the 'HaShalom' Yeshiva, named after Rabbi Shalom Sharabi. The yeshiva became a center for Kabbalistic study, focusing on prayer intentions according to Rabbi Sharabi's siddur and performing special rectifications for various needs, including matchmaking, health, livelihood, and marital harmony. Thousands sought his blessings and guidance for supernatural interventions.

Rabbi Biton gained widespread recognition for his expertise in spiritual matters, particularly for conducting exorcisms of "dybbuks" (possessing spirits). Notable public ceremonies in 1999 and 2010, involving individuals believed to be possessed, were widely publicized and reportedly led to a surge in religious observance and repentance. He was also an inspiring preacher who traveled throughout Israel, encouraging adherence to Jewish law and values, and was known for his staunch defense of Jerusalem's sanctity and pure Jewish tradition.

Rabbi Biton is survived by his children, including rabbis Yitzchak and Shlomo Biton, and many grandchildren, who continue his legacy. He is remembered as a brilliant and righteous scholar who delved into the secrets of the Torah and performed miracles.
