French Diplomat Clarifies Macron's UN Remarks on Hamas

A French diplomatic source has clarified remarks made by President Emmanuel Macron at the UN General Assembly, which drew criticism from Israeli officials. The source told i24NEWS that an alleged mistranslation led to a misunderstanding of Macron's statement regarding Hamas in the West Bank. The original French phrase, "le Hamas n'a jamais sévi en Cisjordanie," was reportedly translated as "Hamas has never been proactive," which was perceived in Israel as factually incorrect. The diplomatic source explained that the actual meaning of the French phrase is "Hamas has never controlled the West Bank."

Macron's speech had initially been reported as stating, "Hamas has never been active in the West Bank." He had also said, "Just look at what is happening in the West Bank, day after day we witness violations. And in the name of what? Hamas has never been active in the West Bank. What we need is respect for the legitimate right of the Palestinian people to exist. This is a prerequisite for the security of the people in Israel, today and in the future."

Regarding Gaza, Macron stated, "A year ago in this very hall, several dozen countries recognized Palestine. I understand that some were very pessimistic. You recognized it on paper. Look at the reality on the ground, but what is the value of our credibility if we remain inactive regarding Gaza? Some claim that peace has been achieved, but that has not led to opening paths for humanitarian aid. This is a disgrace."

Macron also addressed Lebanon, saying, "Only a fully sovereign Lebanon will be able to disarm Hezbollah and restore security for all Lebanese citizens and their neighbors. Their fundamental rights are being violated again."
