Macron's UN Hamas Remarks Spark Outrage in Israel

French President Emmanuel Macron's recent statements at the UN General Assembly regarding Hamas have ignited a firestorm of criticism from Israel. Macron declared he did not understand why Israel claimed Hamas posed a threat in the West Bank, asserting that Hamas "never caused problems on the West Bank." This assertion, described as "detached from reality and meaning" by Ynet correspondent Itamar Eichner, has drawn sharp condemnation from Jerusalem.

Macron's address, which also included veiled criticism of former US President Donald Trump's policies, focused on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He questioned the purpose of recognizing Palestine if action wasn't taken regarding Gaza, and criticized what he termed the "spectacle" of ongoing suffering. He then shifted to the West Bank, stating, "Look at what is happening on the West Bank. Violations are committed daily here, in the name of what? Hamas never caused problems on the West Bank!" He argued that actions undermining the Palestinian right to exist also compromise Israeli security, and that those claiming Israeli security depends on violating neighbors' sovereignty make a "fatal mistake."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vehemently rejected Macron's remarks, calling them "absurd" and "astonishingly ignorant." Netanyahu pointed to the recent murder of French-Israeli citizen Natanel Shokrun by a Hamas terrorist in the West Bank just days prior, emphasizing that Hamas terrorists attack Israelis daily. "Ignorance is no excuse for erasing their blood," Netanyahu stated, highlighting Hamas's long-standing activity and attacks originating from the West Bank.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham also addressed the conflict, calling the October 7th attack from Gaza "absolutely monstrous" but immediately adding that it "does not justify Israel's brutal actions in Gaza or the West Bank." Burnham stated the UK would not stand by while suffering in Gaza continues and the two-state solution is threatened.
