France Clarifies Macron's Hamas Remarks Amid Israeli Criticism
France has attributed remarks made by President Emmanuel Macron about Hamas in the West Bank to a mistranslation, a French diplomatic source told i24NEWS on Wednesday. During a speech at the United Nations General Assembly, Macron stated, "Hamas has never cracked down in the West Bank." The source explained that this was intended to mean Hamas has "never governed the West Bank," but was reportedly translated as "Hamas has never been particularly active."
This clarification follows criticism from Israeli officials who pointed to numerous attacks carried out or claimed by Hamas in the West Bank. Macron's original statement had drawn sharp reactions from Israel.
In the same UN address, Macron also criticized Israeli actions in the West Bank and called for respect for the "legitimate rights of the Palestinian people."
