IDF and Shin Bet: Hamas Commander Involved in Goldin Abduction Eliminated
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet security agency announced that a Hamas commander in Rafah, who was eliminated earlier this week, was involved in the abduction and holding of Israeli soldiers and civilians for years, including during the current war. The eliminated commander, Na'il Abu A'bid, served as the deputy commander of the Rafah Brigade in 2014 and participated in the holding of fallen IDF soldier Second Lieutenant Hadar Goldin, who was captured by Hamas. Throughout the recent conflict, Abu A'bid was also involved in holding several hostages, including Sergeant Nimrod Cohen, in underground infrastructure in the Rafah area.
The IDF and Shin Bet stated that Abu A'bid's elimination represents a significant closing of a circle. Goldin was killed in action during Operation Protective Edge in 2014, and his body has been held by Hamas since then. Cohen was killed in Gaza in May 2024, and his body is also believed to be held by Hamas.
