צה"ל ושב"כ הודיעו כי נאיל אבו עביד, מפקד חטיבת רפיח בחמאס שחוסל השבוע, היה מעורב בחטיפתם והחזקתם של חיילי צה"ל ואזרחים ישראלים במשך שנים ובמהלך המלחמה הנוכחית. על פי הדיווח, אבו עביד, ששימש בשנת 2014 כסגן מפקד חטיבת רפיח, היה שותף להחזקתו של סגן הדר גולדין ז"ל בשבי חמאס. בנוסף, במהלך המלחמה הנוכחית, הוא היה מעורב בהחזקתם של מספר חטופים נוספים, ביניהם רס"ל נמרוד כהן, במתקני תת-קרקע ברפיח. בצה"ל ובשב"כ ציינו כי חיסולו של אבו עביד מהווה "סגירת מעגל חשובה".
