IDF and Shin Bet Eliminate Senior Hamas Commander Involved in Hostage Holdings

The Israeli military and the Shin Bet security agency announced Tuesday the elimination of a senior Hamas commander, Na'el Abu Abed, who led the Rafah Brigade. Intelligence efforts revealed Abu Abed's involvement in the abduction and prolonged holding of Israeli soldiers and civilians for years, including during the current war. In 2014, when he served as deputy commander of the Rafah Brigade, Abu Abed participated in holding IDF Lieutenant Hadar Goldin, who was killed in action, captive. Throughout the recent conflict, he was also involved in holding several other hostages, including Sergeant Nimrod Cohen, also killed in action, within underground infrastructure in the Rafah area.

The IDF stated that Abu Abed's elimination represents an important "closing of a circle" for the military and Shin Bet, vowing to continue operations against terrorists involved in the October 7th massacre. Separately, the IDF reported the elimination of another Hamas militant, Muhammad Suleiman Bayouk, a commander in Hamas's military wing, in Khan Younis on Thursday. Bayouk had infiltrated Israel during the October 7th attack and, during the war, was active in planting explosives in Gaza to target Israeli forces. He also advanced terror plans against Israeli soldiers and civilians and worked to improve the capabilities of Hamas operatives, systematically violating ceasefire agreements. His elimination was carried out to neutralize the threat he posed.
