IDF and Shin Bet Eliminate Senior Hamas Commander Involved in Hostage Holdings
The Israeli military and the Shin Bet intelligence agency announced Tuesday the elimination of a senior Hamas commander, Na'el Abu Abed, who was involved in the abduction and holding of Israeli soldiers and civilians for years, including during the current war. Abu Abed, identified as the commander of Hamas's Rafah Brigade, was killed in an operation in the Gaza Strip earlier this week.
Intelligence efforts revealed that in 2014, Abu Abed, then deputy commander of the Rafah Brigade, participated in holding fallen IDF officer Hadar Goldin captive. Throughout the ongoing war, he was also involved in holding several other hostages, including Sergeant Nimrod Cohen, within Hamas's underground infrastructure in the Rafah area.
The IDF stated that Abu Abed's elimination represents an important "closing of a circle" for the military and the Shin Bet, emphasizing their continued commitment to acting forcefully against terrorists involved in the October 7th massacre.
