IDF: Hamas Khan Younis Commander Involved in Holding Israeli Hostages
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet security agency announced on Tuesday that the commander of Hamas's Khan Younis (Rafah) brigade, Nael Abu A'bid, who was eliminated earlier this week in the Gaza Strip, was involved in the abduction and prolonged holding of Israeli soldiers and civilians. This information emerged following extensive intelligence research conducted by both agencies.
According to the joint statement, Abu A'bid served as deputy commander of the Rafah brigade in 2014 and played a role in the captivity of Second Lieutenant Hadar Goldin, who was killed in action during Operation Protective Edge that year. During the current war, Abu A'bid was involved in holding several hostages within an underground infrastructure in the Rafah area. Notably, he was implicated in the holding of Sergeant First Class Nimrod Cohen.
The IDF and Shin Bet characterized Abu A'bid's elimination as a "closing of a circle" and vowed to continue operations against terrorists involved in the October 7th massacre.
