Umm Al-Fahm Man Killed by Police Sparks Outrage and Calls for Investigation

Ammar Mahamid, a resident of Umm Al-Fahm, was fatally shot by Israeli Border Police officers following a pursuit that began on Route 65. Conflicting accounts have emerged regarding the circumstances of the shooting, with local sources and Mahamid's family claiming he was shot after being apprehended and posing no threat, while police maintain their officers acted in self-defense.

According to local reports and surveillance footage, police intercepted Mahamid's vehicle in Umm Al-Fahm. After he exited the car, an officer is seen approaching and shooting him at close range. The police, however, stated that their officers had spotted a suspicious vehicle on Route 65 and that the driver failed to stop, leading to a pursuit that endangered other road users. They claim that upon apprehending the driver inside the city, he behaved suspiciously within his vehicle and then exited to attack an approaching officer, prompting the officer to fire his weapon, fearing for his life.

Mahamid's family asserts he was "executed in cold blood" and highlights that he suffered from mental health issues and had previously received treatment. His brother, Fathi Mahamid, accused the police of removing surveillance footage from the area after the shooting to protect the officer involved. A friend corroborated that Mahamid had mental health struggles and was known to health services.

In response to the incident, Umm Al-Fahm municipality and the local popular committee held an emergency meeting, condemning the killing and demanding an independent and professional investigation. They expressed distrust in the police's internal investigation unit, "Mahash," calling it a tactic to bury the truth. Protest plans, including a public funeral and a demonstration, were announced.

The Joint List political party also condemned the shooting, accusing the police, under the direction of National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, of having a "light trigger finger" when dealing with Arab citizens and of exhibiting a dangerous mentality that devalues Arab lives. The incident has reignited criticism of Israeli police practices with Arab citizens, particularly regarding the use of excessive force during arrests and pursuits, contrasting with perceived inaction against organized crime in Arab communities.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed under house arrest for five days and restricted from Umm Al-Fahm and police stations. Police stated the circumstances of the incident are under review. Since the beginning of 2026, nine Arab citizens have been killed by police fire, according to "Arab 48" data, with families in most cases disputing the police's account of events.
