Israeli Police Solve Umm al-Fahm Blood Feud Murder of Muhammad Mahamid

Israeli police investigators from the Coastal District Unit have solved the murder of Muhammad Mahamid in Umm al-Fahm, which occurred in January 2024. Mahamid was shot dead near a neighborhood bakery by two assailants who fired at least nine bullets into his back. The killing was motivated by a blood feud linked to family honor, stemming from accusations against Mahamid's brother in a previous murder case.

Despite efforts to erase evidence, such as thoroughly washing the crime scene and setting fire to the getaway car containing weapons and mobile phones, investigators successfully gathered forensic and intelligence evidence. This led to the arrest of the suspects and the filing of a severe indictment by the Haifa District Attorney's Office. Charges include intentional murder under aggravating circumstances, weapons offenses, arson, evidence destruction, obstruction of justice, vehicle identity alteration, and intentional property damage. A request for the suspects' detention until trial was also submitted.

The case resolution reflects a broader shift in police enforcement within the Arab sector, marked by an increase in indictments and detention requests. Recent months have seen a decline in murders in the Arab community, from 28 in June to 11 in July, and six in the first 12 days of August. However, the overall number of 152 murders since the start of the year remains similar to last year’s figures. Family members of Mahamid personally thanked the investigators for closing the case, highlighting the significance of this breakthrough in a complex security environment.
