Umm al-Fahm Officials Demand Independent Probe After Police Shooting Death

Following the fatal shooting of Alaa Mahamid by police, officials in Umm al-Fahm convened an emergency meeting. The session included representatives from the Mahamid family, municipal council members, the popular committee, and activists, chaired by Mayor Dr. Samir Subhi. Participants discussed the circumstances of Mahamid's death, with attendees asserting, according to a statement from the municipality and popular committee, that the young man was killed "without any fault he committed or any threat to police officers."

At the meeting's conclusion, the mayor announced several decisions. These include organizing a public funeral for Mahamid in coordination with his family and holding a protest rally at the city's main roundabout next Saturday at 5 p.m. The attendees also resolved to request an emergency meeting of the Higher Follow-up Committee and the National Committee in Umm al-Fahm.

Furthermore, the community leaders emphasized concerns regarding the Border Police, describing their actions as "aggressive practices against citizens." The municipality and popular committee also committed to pursuing legal avenues with the Mahamid family to push for an independent and impartial investigation committee, separate from the one conducted by the Police Internal Investigations Department (Mahash).
