Police Shoot and Kill Arab Man in Umm al-Fahm After Alleged Attack

A video circulating online shows the moment police shot and killed Ala'a Mahamid in the city of Umm al-Fahm on Thursday. The Israeli Border Police stated that officers from their tactical unit, operating on motorcycles, opened fire on a suspect after he allegedly attacked an officer during an attempted arrest. According to the police, officers observed a suspicious vehicle driving on Route 65 and signaled for the driver to stop. The driver reportedly failed to comply and began to flee, driving in a manner that endangered other road users.

During the attempt to apprehend the suspect, police claim his behavior raised suspicions while he was still inside his vehicle. When an officer approached the car, Mahamid allegedly exited and assaulted the officer. The police statement indicated that the officer, fearing for his life, fired his weapon, hitting the suspect. Mahamid was later pronounced dead.

The Umm al-Fahm municipality condemned the killing, holding the police responsible and demanding an independent investigation with full transparency and accountability. The Joint List political party also strongly denounced the incident, calling it a "horrific extrajudicial execution" by police forces. They accused the police of a complete blackout on the real details and of deliberately spreading unproven claims to justify the shooting. The Joint List further alleged that Israeli police, under direct instructions from Minister Ben-Gvir, have a "light trigger finger" policy when dealing with Arab citizens.
