Police Shoot and Kill Arab Israeli Man in Umm al-Fahm

A young Arab Israeli man, Alaa Mahamid, was killed on Thursday afternoon in Umm al-Fahm after police officers opened fire on him. According to an initial police statement, Border Police motorcycle officers shot a suspect after he attacked an officer during an attempted arrest.

The officers had been operating in the area when they observed a suspicious vehicle on Route 65. They ordered the driver to stop, but he refused and fled, driving in a manner that endangered other road users. A pursuit ensued, joined by Umm al-Fahm police officers, and concluded within the city.

During the arrest attempt, the suspect's behavior inside his vehicle raised suspicions. When an officer approached, the suspect exited the car and attacked the officer. The officer, fearing for his life, fired his weapon, striking the suspect.

The injured suspect was taken for medical treatment, and an investigation into the incident has been launched. The Umm al-Fahm municipality condemned the killing, holding the police responsible and demanding an independent investigation. In a statement, the municipality expressed deep sorrow over Mahamid's death and offered condolences to his family. While acknowledging the police's account, they stressed the need for full transparency and accountability.

The municipality has called for a professional, independent investigation committee to examine all circumstances and motives behind the shooting. The police commander reportedly informed the mayor that the incident has been referred to the Police Investigations Department, with the mayor requesting an independent committee that includes a family member of the deceased.
