Border Police Officer Kills Attacker in Umm al-Fahm, Faces Investigation

An Israeli Border Police officer shot and killed a suspect in Umm al-Fahm on Thursday after the suspect allegedly attacked the officer during an attempted arrest. The incident began earlier when officers on patrol in the area noticed a suspicious vehicle on Highway 65. When signaled to stop, the driver reportedly fled, leading officers on a chase that ended within the city. During the attempted apprehension, the suspect allegedly exited his vehicle, charged at an officer, and began assaulting him. The officer, fearing for his life, opened fire, striking the suspect. The suspect was taken for medical treatment but later pronounced dead. The Police Internal Investigations Department (Mahash) has launched a probe into the shooting. The officer who fired the shots was questioned under caution on suspicion of causing death and subsequently released to five days of house arrest. He is also prohibited from entering police stations for two weeks and has been banned from Umm al-Fahm for 30 days while the investigation continues.
