Northern Israel Trio Charged in Million Shekel Extortion Plot

By כיכר השבת, קובי רוזן
Translated & summarized from Kikar HaShabbat by baba
The story · English

Three men from northern Israel have been indicted for demanding one million shekels (approximately $270,000 USD) in protection money from a victim, threatening to harm him and his family. The extortion scheme began after a bureaucratic error led to a plot of land, rightfully won by the victim, being registered in another person's name. This other individual then allegedly hired a crime family to pressure the victim.

The threats escalated to include the hurling of grenades at the victim's home and those of his relatives. The suspects also summoned the victim for a meeting to settle the "compensation" they demanded for the land. When the victim refused their demands, he received explicit threats against his life and the lives of his family members.

During an investigation by the Northern District Police, utilizing technological means, the three suspects were apprehended shortly after the threats began. The suspects, aged 32, 36, and 50, are residents of the villages of Kafr Kanna and Nazareth.

A formal indictment is expected to be filed against the trio at the Nazareth-Nof HaGalil Magistrate's Court by the Northern District Prosecutor's Office. The police stated they are conducting extensive operations against crime, using all available tools to ensure public order and resident safety, and will continue to prosecute lawbreakers.
