Man Sentenced to 22 Years for Reckless Murder in Road Rage Incident

A 35-year-old man, Denis Mokin, has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for the reckless murder of 19-year-old Diyar Omri. The District Court in Nazareth also ordered Mokin to pay NIS 258,000 in compensation to the victim's family. Mokin was convicted of reckless murder following a road rage confrontation that occurred on May 6, 2023. The court rejected defense arguments of self-defense, stating Mokin initiated and escalated the conflict.

Mokin was driving his mother's car while disqualified, under the influence of alcohol and cannabis, and carrying a personal firearm. He engaged in an argument with Omri over driving conduct, then suddenly stopped his vehicle and fired shots into the air. A physical altercation ensued, during which Mokin shot Omri twice in the chest at close range. As Omri attempted to flee, Mokin fired three more shots at his back.

Mokin fled the scene and later returned with his sister, instructing her to lie to the police about who was driving. The court noted Mokin's lack of remorse and his extensive traffic offenses, including prior drunk driving convictions. The judges highlighted the devastating impact of Omri's death on his parents, who described the destruction of their family life.

The prosecution had sought a life sentence, the maximum penalty for reckless homicide, while the defense requested 14 to 18 years. The court determined an appropriate sentencing range of 20 to 25 years, ultimately settling on 22 years, considering Mokin's clean criminal record and time already spent in custody, balanced against his lack of full responsibility and the risk he poses.
