Murder Sentencing Postponed Due to Defense Attorney's Illness

A sentencing hearing for Denis Mokin, convicted of killing Diyar Al-Omri, was postponed on Monday due to the defense attorney experiencing a health emergency. The hearing was scheduled to take place at the Nazareth Central Court. The "Mizan" Organization for Human Rights in Nazareth reported the postponement.

Mokin was convicted in December 2025 of reckless homicide, a lesser charge than the premeditated murder initially brought by the prosecution. The prosecution had requested a sentence of at least 26 years, citing the severity of the crime, while the defense sought 14 to 18 years.

The court will announce a new date for the sentencing hearing at a later time, according to the Mizan organization.

The case dates back to May 6, 2023, when 20-year-old Diyar Al-Omri was shot and killed by Mokin following an altercation near the Gan Nir settlement, adjacent to the village of Sandala. The prosecution filed charges against Mokin in June 2023.

In December 2025, the Nazareth Central Court found Mokin guilty of reckless homicide, a decision that angered Al-Omri's family. At the time of the conviction, lawyer Omar Khmaisy explained that the judges were divided on the issue of criminal intent, deferring the sentencing to a later session.
