Man Sentenced to 22 Years for Shooting Wounded Driver in Back

A Jerusalem court has sentenced a man to 22 years in prison for the murder of Diyar Omri, who was killed in a fit of road rage. The court found the defendant guilty of murder with indifference, citing his lack of remorse and self-control.

The incident began when the defendant, driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol despite being legally barred from driving, became frustrated with Omri's driving. He stopped his car, drew a handgun, and fired a warning shot into the air. A physical altercation ensued, during which the defendant shot Omri twice.

Despite being severely wounded, Omri managed to escape back to his car in an attempt to flee. However, the defendant pursued him and fired multiple shots at Omri's back as he tried to escape. The defendant then fled the scene without calling for medical assistance for the dying victim. He later returned with his sister, who attempted to mislead the police by claiming she was the driver.

The court rejected the defense's claim of self-defense, stating that the evidence showed the defendant actively pursued and shot a wounded victim who was trying to escape. The court emphasized that this constituted a severe violation of public safety and justified a lengthy prison sentence. In addition to the 22-year prison term, the defendant received suspended sentences, a three-year driving ban, and was ordered to pay 258,000 shekels in compensation to Omri's family.
