Man Sentenced to 22 Years for Road Rage Murder of 19-Year-Old

Denis Mokin has been sentenced to 22 years in prison after being convicted of the murder of 19-year-old Diar Omri, following a road rage incident. The court also ordered Mokin to pay 258,000 shekels in compensation to Omri's family.

Mokin was convicted by a majority decision of murder with indifference, a lesser charge than the original indictment for intentional murder. The court found that the incident began over a trivial road dispute, with Omri allegedly irritating Mokin with his driving. After Omri slowed down and pulled over, Mokin stopped his car, exited while it was still moving, and confronted Omri. A physical struggle ensued, during which Mokin fired shots, fatally wounding Omri in the chest.

Following the shooting, Mokin fled the scene without calling for help. He then picked up his sister and asked her to claim she was driving the car to conceal his own offenses, including driving while disqualified and under the influence of alcohol. The sister initially corroborated his story to police but later revealed the truth. The court rejected Mokin's self-defense claim.

Omri's family described him as a responsible and beloved individual whose death has devastated their lives. His mother has required psychological and psychiatric treatment, and his father's health has deteriorated. Mokin, who had no prior criminal record but a history of traffic violations including drunk driving, expressed remorse in court and asked for forgiveness, stating he did not intend to kill Omri.

The court considered Mokin's clean criminal record and his stable life prior to the incident, but also the severity of the crime, his traffic offenses, and his difficulty in taking full responsibility. Mokin has the right to appeal the sentence to the Supreme Court within 45 days.
