The story · English

The Nazareth District Court has sentenced Dennis Mookin to 22 years in prison for the 2023 murder of Diyar Omri, following a road rage incident in the Gilboa region. Mookin was convicted of murder with indifference after a dispute over driving escalated into violence. In addition to the prison sentence, he was ordered to pay NIS 258,000 in compensation to Omri's family and had his driver's license revoked.

Mookin was also found guilty of driving while disqualified, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, obstruction of justice, and malicious damage to a vehicle. The indictment states that in May 2023, Mookin, a resident of Gan Ner, became enraged by Omri's, a resident of the village of Sandala, driving. Mookin, who was driving illegally and under the influence, exited his vehicle armed with a licensed handgun. He fired a shot in the air and then physically confronted Omri.

During the ensuing fight, Mookin shot Omri twice, fatally wounding him. Even after Omri was injured and attempted to retreat, Mookin continued to fire at his back before fleeing the scene without rendering aid. He later returned with his sister and asked her to falsely claim to the police that she was driving the car, in an attempt to obstruct the investigation.

The court rejected the defense's claim of self-defense, determining the appropriate sentence range to be between 20 and 25 years. The judges noted the severity of Mookin's actions, stemming from a trivial road dispute, and his lack of remorse. However, they also considered his lack of prior criminal record and the extended period he spent in detention. The court previously ruled that it was not proven Mookin intended to kill Omri, leading to the conviction for murder with indifference. A hearing transcript from July 2024 revealed that Mookin shouted "Death to Arabs" at Omri during the altercation.
