British Rabbi Found Dead in Ukrainian Forest Near Uman, Foul Play Suspected

The body of a British Jewish man, identified as Yitzhak Elmakiess, was discovered in a forest near Uman, Ukraine, with signs of violence. Elmakiess, described as a Breslov Hasid in his 40s or 50s and a father of seven, had been in Uman for several weeks. His body was found by fellow Hasidim who were in the area for Hitbodedut, a practice of secluded prayer and meditation.

Ukrainian law enforcement is investigating the circumstances of his death but has not yet officially stated the cause or the charges being pursued. There are no suspects identified at this time. Sources familiar with the case suggest several potential motives are being examined, including robbery that escalated to murder, a possible antisemitic attack, or a conflict with local police. Elmakiess's death occurred during the period of mass pilgrimage by Breslov Hasidim to Uman for Rosh Hashanah. This year's pilgrimage saw a record number of visitors, with approximately 45,000 pilgrims arriving, exceeding previous years and occurring despite the ongoing war and threat of Russian attacks. Enhanced security measures were in place, with hundreds of Ukrainian law enforcement officers and Israeli police present.

Israeli emergency organizations, including "Ichud Hatzala" and "ZAKA," are involved in the efforts to identify the body and facilitate its swift return for burial. While Ukrainian authorities have not commented on an antisemitic motive, Ukrainian law includes specific articles addressing incitement to hatred and discrimination based on religion, which could impact the investigation and sentencing if such a motive is proven.
