Jewish Man Found Dead in Ukrainian Forest Near Uman; Murder Suspected

The body of a Jewish man, approximately 45 years old, was discovered in a forest near the tomb of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov in Uman, Ukraine. United Hatzalah reported the finding on Sunday evening, stating that all investigative avenues are being explored, including the possibility of murder. The deceased is described as a Hasid and a father of seven, who had traveled to Ukraine from England.

Aharon Ben Harush, the head of the United Hatzalah delegation in Uman, stated that the organization's medical teams were dispatched to the scene after receiving a report of a body found in the forest. They were unfortunately forced to pronounce the man dead. United Hatzalah and ZAKA teams are cooperating with Ukrainian authorities to release the body for prompt burial.

Uman, located in central Ukraine, has become a major pilgrimage site for Breslov Hasidim due to the burial site of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, the founder of the Hasidic movement, who died in 1810. Tens of thousands of Jews from around the world visit the city annually, particularly for Rosh Hashanah, to pray at the tomb. The tradition of pilgrimage to Uman on Rosh Hashanah began in 1811, shortly after Rabbi Nachman's death, and resumed in large numbers after the fall of the Soviet Union.

According to the Israel Democracy Institute, around 50,000 people visit Rabbi Nachman's tomb each Rosh Hashanah, though numbers vary annually.
