Raz Hershko Wins Gold at Budapest Grand Slam Judo Tournament
Israeli judoka Raz Hershko secured a gold medal at the Budapest Grand Slam tournament on Sunday, winning the over 78 kg category. Hershko's path to victory included wins by ippon against Fernanda Cuerpos of Angola and Sidney Andrewes of New Zealand, followed by a penalty-based win over Estonia's Emma-Meliise Ots in the semifinals. In the final, she faced France's Celia Cancan, the under-21 world champion. Despite a near chokehold from Cancan, Hershko executed a decisive throw for ippon to claim the title. "I am very happy and proud. Standing on the top of the podium and hearing the anthem is always a powerful and special moment, and on the last day of Rosh Hashanah it is even more exciting," Hershko stated.
Earlier in the week, Israeli judoka Yitzhak Narkhov won a gold medal in the under 60 kg category. Narkhov, returning from injury, defeated opponents from Uzbekistan, the Netherlands, and Portugal before advancing to the final. He secured his gold medal match win against Enzo Jean of France with a counter-throw for ippon after Jean made a mistake during a technique attempt.
Another Israeli competitor, Gefen Primo, who recently won gold at the Lausanne Grand Slam, finished in seventh place in Budapest. Joseph Semen also placed fifth in his category.
