Raz Hershko Wins Gold at Budapest Grand Slam Judo Tournament

Israeli judoka Raz Hershko secured a gold medal at the Budapest Grand Slam on Sunday, marking a significant achievement for Israeli judo. Hershko, competing in the +78 kg category, defeated her opponents with impressive displays, culminating in an 'ippon' (full point) victory in the final against France's Clarisse Agbegnenou. This gold medal adds to Israel's success at the tournament, following a gold medal won by Yemen Asaf and a bronze by Gefen Primo. Yosef Vormiser also competed, reaching the bronze medal match but ultimately finishing in fifth place after a loss to Russia's Tamerlan Bashaev.

Hershko's path to victory included wins over competitors from Angola, New Zealand, and Estonia. Her performance was characterized by strong offensive judo, leading to multiple penalties for her opponents. Following her win, Hershko expressed immense pride and happiness, dedicating her medal to the memory of Yonatan Gutin and his family. She highlighted the emotional significance of winning on the last day of Rosh Hashanah and thanked her coach, support staff, and the Israeli Judo Association.
