Israel Foils Major Arms Smuggling Attempt from Jordan Border

Israeli security forces thwarted an attempt to smuggle dozens of weapons across the eastern border into the Jordan Valley overnight. The operation, a joint effort by multiple security units, resulted in the arrest of two Arab men, both in their 50s and residents of Jericho.

During the operation, security forces seized 34 pistols and two M-16 rifles from the suspects. The operation was initiated based on intelligence indicating preparations for a significant arms smuggling operation originating from the Jordan border area.

To intercept the smugglers, forces from the Jordan Border Police, the central district's intelligence unit, the West Bank's Border Police special operations unit, the Jordan Valley Brigade, and the "Mar'ul" unit were deployed. They established ambushes at several locations and utilized specialized technological equipment to detect and apprehend the suspects in real-time.

The two arrested individuals were transferred to the central district's intelligence unit for interrogation. Investigators are working to determine the intended destination of the weapons, identify the individuals behind the smuggling attempt, and ascertain if other parties are involved.

Security officials emphasized that the fight against arms smuggling along the eastern border is ongoing, driven by concerns that weapons trafficked into Israel and the West Bank could fall into the hands of hostile elements.
