Israel Foils Major Weapons Smuggling Attempt at Jordan Border
Israeli security forces thwarted an attempt to smuggle 35 weapons across the eastern border on Thursday night, arresting two suspects in the process. The suspects, identified as Jericho residents in their 50s, and the seized weaponry were handed over for further investigation.
The operation began when IDF observation posts detected activity suggesting an impending smuggling attempt in the border region. In response, forces from the Jordan Valley Brigade, officers from the Jordan Border Unit of the Judea and Samaria District Police, and fighters from the special operations unit of the Border Police were dispatched.
These forces established ambushes at various points in the area. During the operation, the two suspects were apprehended, and a significant cache of weapons was found in their possession. The seizure included over 30 handguns and two M-16 rifles, bringing the total number of weapons confiscated to 35.
The suspects and the weapons were transferred to the Judea and Samaria District's Central Unit, which is now investigating the circumstances of the smuggling attempt and the intended recipients of the weapons. The IDF stated that security forces continue to operate extensively along the eastern border to prevent arms smuggling and ensure the safety of Israeli citizens.
