IDF Arrests Palestinian Police Officers for Detaining, Assaulting Israeli Near Ramallah

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) arrested three Palestinian police officers this week who had detained and assaulted an Israeli citizen near Ramallah. The incident occurred after the officers established a roadblock in Area C, near the Palestinian town of Beitunia, on August 24. According to the IDF, the officers illegally stopped an Israeli citizen driving on a bypass road in the western Benjamin region, confiscated his weapon, and used aggressive force against him. The IDF stated that the Israeli citizen was not physically harmed during the incident.

Security officials described the event as a "severe deviation from the officers' authority to operate in these areas, endangering the Israeli citizen's life and using severe, aggressive force against him." The IDF emphasized its commitment to security coordination as directed by the political echelon, but stressed that it "will not accept any deviation from procedures." The arrested officers have been transferred to security forces for investigation.

The Yesha Council, representing Israeli settlements in the West Bank, strongly criticized the Civil Administration's response, accusing it of blaming the Israeli driver for traveling in a dangerous area instead of condemning the Palestinian police's prohibited actions in Area C. Israel Gantz, head of the Benjamin Regional Council and chairman of the Yesha Council, stated that the incident proves the Oslo Accords are meaningless and called for their cancellation, demanding freedom of movement and settlement in the region.
