IDF Arrests Palestinian Police Officers for Attacking, Abducting Israeli Reservist

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced this week the arrest of three Palestinian Authority (PA) police officers involved in stopping, assaulting, and abducting an Israeli reservist near Ramallah. The officers allegedly set up a roadblock in Area C, a designation for territory under full Israeli control, near the Palestinian town of Beitunia, and acted outside their jurisdiction.

According to the IDF, the incident involved an aggressive use of force against the Israeli civilian, identified as Lameh Rosenthal, a member of a neighborhood defense team. Rosenthal recounted that he was traveling to Jerusalem late Saturday night when he encountered the roadblock. He initially mistook it for an Israeli police checkpoint. When the officers identified him, they blocked his vehicle, opened his door, and demanded he surrender his weapon. After Rosenthal refused, identifying himself as a reservist, more PA police vehicles arrived. He described being pepper-sprayed, kicked, and beaten while they attempted to seize his weapon, which they eventually succeeded in doing. They then handcuffed him and drove him to a police facility in Ramallah.

Rosenthal stated that upon arrival at the station, he saw a crowd of young people gathered. He was later transferred to Israeli forces and taken to the police station in Modi'in Illit, where his testimony was taken and his weapon returned. Rosenthal expressed dissatisfaction with the subsequent police handling of his complaint, feeling he was blamed for seeking trouble rather than the PA officers being held accountable.

Israeli security officials described the event as a "severe deviation by the mechanisms, endangering the life of the Israeli citizen and using aggressive and severe force against him." The IDF emphasized its commitment to security coordination with the PA as directed by political leadership but stated it "will not accept any deviation from procedures." The arrests were carried out by IDF forces and are currently under investigation by security forces.

Local Israeli officials, including Israel Gantz, head of the Binyamin Regional Council and Yesha Council, praised the IDF's actions, calling the arrests a "necessary step that sends a clear message: the State of Israel is sovereign in Area C, and we will not allow the PA mechanisms to set up roadblocks there, abduct Israeli citizens, and use violence against them." Gantz also extended responsibility beyond Area C, stating Israel is responsible for the security of its citizens in Area B as well.

The original statement from the Civil Administration, which initially reported the incident, focused on Rosenthal's presence in a "dangerous area," drawing sharp criticism from the Binyamin Council for allegedly blaming the victim instead of condemning the PA police's actions in Area C.
