IDF Allowed Palestinian Authority Police to Operate Freely in Area C for Years, Enabling Militia Kidnapping

An initial investigation into the recent kidnapping of an Israeli reservist near Beitunia reveals a prolonged failure by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to control Area C, a zone under full Israeli authority. For years, the IDF permitted armed Palestinian Authority (PA) security forces to operate freely within this area, where the abduction took place.

The armed PA police who detained and forcibly transferred the reservist acted precisely within the territory where the IDF had authorized their ongoing presence. Despite clear evidence of kidnapping, Israeli military officials have so far refrained from imposing sanctions on PA personnel or officially labeling the incident as a kidnapping.

The incident occurred two days ago when PA police set up a roadblock in Area C, stopped the reservist who was on leave, confiscated his personal weapon, sprayed him with pepper spray, and forcibly moved him to Ramallah. Settler leaders condemned the event as a clear kidnapping, while the Benjamin Regional Council sharply criticized the Israeli Civil Administration for blaming the soldier for traveling in a "dangerous area."
