Late Wednesday evening, Palestinian security services relayed an unusual alert to Israeli authorities: an Israeli soldier in uniform had been found in the middle of the Palestinian village of Tarkumia in the southern Hebron Hills. The military coordination and liaison headquarters of the Civil Administration immediately contacted its Palestinian counterparts, and together with a force already securing the area, quickly reached a previously agreed meeting point, where the soldier was handed over to Israeli liaison officers.
The soldier was then interrogated by the brigade commander for the sector and transferred to police custody, before being handed over to the Military Police Criminal Investigation Division. He is an active-duty conscript. According to his account, he was kidnapped and taken to the village, where he was put out of the vehicle and the kidnappers fled.
Investigators believe the incident was criminal rather than security-related. No further details were given about how the soldier reached the village or who was involved.
The article also noted a separate event from last Saturday, when the Civil Administration rescued an Israeli civilian who had entered Qalqilya with a friend overnight and was then abandoned there. Local residents spotted the Israeli wandering around the city and reported him to the security system. Israeli officials again stressed that entry into Area A endangers lives and is prohibited by law.
