IDF Takes Disciplinary Action Against Soldiers Over Abuse of Palestinian Suspect in Gaza

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) concluded an investigation into a serious incident involving the abuse of a Palestinian suspect in northern Gaza, where the suspect was tied to a bed against regulations and a photo of him was posted online. The incident occurred in June when the suspect approached an IDF outpost on foot and was detained by soldiers from the Netzah Yehuda Battalion. He was restrained with rope and tape, blindfolded, and handcuffed. Shortly after, a photo of the suspect was uploaded to Instagram by the soldiers, sparking international criticism against the IDF.

Following the investigation, disciplinary measures were taken against five soldiers from the Netzah Yehuda Battalion, including two officers. The platoon commander’s promotion was canceled and he was reassigned to a staff position, while the deputy platoon commander received a reprimand. The soldier who took the photo and the one who tied the suspect each received five days of military imprisonment, with the latter also dismissed from combat duty. Another soldier present at the event was sentenced to two weeks of base confinement. The investigation into two additional soldiers from outside the battalion is ongoing.

The IDF’s probe found that the soldiers’ conduct did not align with IDF values. The suspect reportedly became agitated after arrest, raising concerns he might harm himself, but the method of restraint and the photo’s dissemination violated protocols and amplified global criticism. The IDF stated that gaps in command conduct were identified and addressed with thorough investigation and reinforcement of guidelines to the troops. Earlier reports revealed that soldiers initially lied about the incident and only admitted the facts after the investigation began.
