Senior IDF Official Addresses Serious Disciplinary Incident in Givati Brigade's Tzabar Battalion

A senior Israeli military official responded on Thursday to a severe disciplinary incident involving the Tzabar Battalion of the Givati Brigade, where over 100 soldiers and commanders abandoned their base at Sde Teyman without authorization. The official condemned the act as a serious breach of discipline that has no place in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), but emphasized that the matter will be handled with balance, combining respect for the soldiers with strict demands.

The incident occurred after the battalion commander publicly broke the "pugim", metal plaques bearing the morale slogans of the battalion’s companies and platoons, in front of the troops. In reaction, dozens of fighters and commanders left the base carrying only their personal belongings, leaving behind their weapons and equipment. This event was first reported by Israel Hayom.

The Givati Brigade, known as the "Purple Brigade," recently completed eight months of intense combat operations in southern Lebanon, including areas north of the Litani River and the Bofor ridge. The brigade’s combat team, reinforced by an armored battalion from the 188th Brigade and an engineering battalion, destroyed hundreds of terrorist infrastructures, eliminated hundreds of Hezbollah militants, and located over 1,000 weapons caches. Northern Command Chief Major General Rafi Milo praised the brigade’s courage and dedication during a recent combat ceremony.

The senior military source highlighted the complexity of addressing the incident, acknowledging the soldiers’ proven combat record and sacrifices while underscoring the gravity of abandoning a base and leaving weapons unattended. The official stated the response will be carried out "with love and respect for the soldiers, while setting high and uncompromising standards." The Tzabar Battalion is a core unit of the Givati Brigade, with many of its fighters being graduates of Hesder yeshivas. Recent assignments for the August intake of Hesder yeshiva students include placements in the Givati Brigade.
