IDF Givati Brigade Soldiers Punished for Unauthorized Protest Over Unit Traditions

Following a protest at the Shde Teiman base, four additional soldiers from the Givati Brigade's "Tzabar" battalion were sentenced to military detention and removed from combat duty. Three soldiers received 30 days of detention and dismissal from combat roles, while a fourth, on leave, was sentenced to 20 days and also dismissed. This follows an earlier disciplinary action against 14 soldiers for the same incident.

The protest occurred last Thursday when dozens of soldiers left the base without authorization to oppose officers who destroyed signs and symbols tied to the battalion's "young veterans" tradition. The battalion commander had warned that those returning by 4 p.m. would not be punished. The IDF stated the event is under investigation and emphasized it contradicts the army's values and expectations.

Brigade commander Colonel Natanel Shamkha addressed the troops, stressing that discipline and respect for command are essential and that the incident would be handled seriously but responsibly. A senior military source noted that all soldiers had fought bravely in combat zones, but the disciplinary breach was severe and would be addressed with both care and strict standards.

The battalion commander, Lt. Col. M., explained in a letter to soldiers' parents that the destroyed signs represented harmful traditions involving violence and humiliation. He justified removing most signs except a few with sentimental value and urged parents to influence their children to return to base. Soldiers described the signs as important symbols of their unit's spirit and heritage, passed down through generations and vital for morale after combat in Gaza and Lebanon. They expressed frustration with the officers' actions and vowed not to remain silent about the disrespect they face.
