IDF Files Charges Against Three Reservists for Abuse of Gaza Detainee

The Israel Defense Forces announced on Tuesday that three reservist soldiers will face indictment for aggravated abuse of a Gaza detainee. The charges stem from an incident reported in December 2024 at the Naftali detention facility, where the detainee was allegedly mistreated. According to the indictment, the soldiers took the handcuffed and blindfolded detainee to a shower room under the pretense of a disciplinary talk and physically assaulted him without any prior provocation. The abuse ceased only after the detainee was visibly injured.

The detainee, an illegal Gaza resident who had been in Israel without authorization since August 2023, was arrested by security forces in October 2024. His detention order was canceled in late December 2024, and he was deported back to Gaza before the investigation began; he is not listed as a witness in the case. The indictment is based on testimonies from the accused soldiers and other military personnel collected during the investigation conducted by the Military Police Investigations Unit.

Following the investigation and after the suspects were given a hearing opportunity, the military prosecution filed the indictment on July 1, 2026. The case has drawn political criticism, notably from Knesset member Tali Gottlieb, who accused the military prosecution of persecuting Israeli soldiers and favoring the testimony of a "notorious" Hamas-affiliated detainee over that of the soldiers. Gottlieb condemned the delay in filing charges, suggesting the evidence was insufficient or fabricated, and criticized the military prosecution for undermining the IDF's fighters.

The incident and subsequent legal proceedings highlight ongoing tensions regarding the treatment of detainees and the military justice system’s handling of such cases within the Israeli security apparatus.
