Maccabi Tel Aviv Ownership Dispute Escalates to Legal Battle

American businessman Richard Daiz has filed a legal injunction against Shimon Mizrahi, the veteran chairman of Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball club, in an escalating ownership dispute. The move follows Mizrahi's announcement that he exercised his right of refusal regarding a proposed sale of shares. Daiz is seeking to freeze any stock transfers from the current date, moving the conflict between the club's owners to the legal arena, with hearings expected soon.

The controversy began when Daiz invoked his right of refusal against a move by another owner, Recanati, who had attempted to sell part of his holdings to the Levin family. In response to Daiz's action, Mizrahi then exercised his own right of refusal against Daiz's move.

Mizrahi issued a statement criticizing some owners, asserting that anyone seeking to lead the club must remember they are there to serve it, not the other way around. He expressed concern about individuals seeking to take over the team without understanding that the club comes before any individual, including its owners. Mizrahi emphasized the need for stability and focus on basketball, stating, "We will not allow a hostile takeover of the club by those who, in our eyes, do not have Maccabi's best interests at heart."

Daiz responded with his own statement, deeming the transfer of ownership to a new party without deep, prior ties to Maccabi as highly dangerous. He argued that Maccabi is more than just a business and its fans are not mere numbers on a spreadsheet to generate investment returns for owners.
