Maccabi Tel Aviv Ownership Dispute Escalates as Mizrahi Exercises Right of First Refusal

The ownership saga surrounding Israeli basketball club Maccabi Tel Aviv has taken a new turn, with Shimon Mizrahi announcing he is exercising his right of first refusal on a deal that would have seen Jason Levin acquire shares in the club. This move by Mizrahi, a foundational shareholder, effectively nullifies Richard Deitz's earlier decision to exercise his own right of refusal on the same transaction.

Deitz had previously announced his intention to block the sale to Levin, citing concerns about the potential new owner's lack of deep connection to the club. In a message to fans, Deitz explained his decision, stating, "The transfer of ownership to a new entity, without a deep and prior connection to Maccabi, is extremely dangerous. Maccabi is not just a business. Maccabi fans are not just numbers on a spreadsheet."

Deitz emphasized his personal investment in the club since 2013, highlighting his attendance at numerous games both in Tel Aviv and across Europe. He expressed his desire to restore excellence to the organization and return Maccabi to its status as a European powerhouse, winning championships.

"Maccabi is passion. Maccabi is stories. Maccabi is legends. Maccabi is unbelievable victories," Deitz wrote, underscoring the emotional significance of the club. He concluded by stressing the importance of fan support, stating, "Together... without you, without the fans, we are just a basketball team. But with you, there are no limits."
