Maccabi Tel Aviv Chairman Shimon Mizrahi Vows to Protect Club Amid Ownership Battle

Shimon Mizrahi, the long-time chairman of Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball club, has issued a strong statement addressing the ongoing ownership disputes surrounding the team. Mizrahi announced his intention to exercise his right of first refusal to purchase additional shares in the club, citing his deep connection and commitment to ensuring its stability.

Mizrahi explained that the current situation arose after the Federman family, through their company Pedanco, decided to sell a significant portion of their shares. He supports the move by Naftali Company, owned by the Rekanati family, to exercise their right of first refusal, emphasizing that the goal is to safeguard Maccabi Tel Aviv's future.

He also commented on the expected addition of Jason Levien as a shareholder, whom he has known for twenty years and respects for his extensive experience in sports, particularly in basketball clubs, with connections to the NBA and familiarity with the EuroLeague. Mizrahi believes Levien's expertise could be crucial given the anticipated changes in European basketball.

Criticizing the conduct surrounding the ownership struggle, Mizrahi alleged that "baseless fabrications" have been spread against his partners, the club, and its leadership. He stressed that the club should remain the focus, free from conflicts that hinder the team's concentration on basketball. "Maccabi is bigger than any of us. Whoever seeks to lead it must remember that they are there to serve the club, not for the club to serve them," he wrote.

Mizrahi also revealed that Maccabi Tel Aviv has allocated its highest-ever player and professional staff acquisition budget of $32 million for the upcoming season. This investment has facilitated significant signings, including Yam Madar, and the return of Bonzie Colson, aiming to provide the team with the necessary resources for success and a strong season for the fans.

Concluding his statement, Mizrahi urged for a calming of tensions, stating, "Now, I hope peace will also come to Maccabi. We have great challenges in the coming season, and the team needs to be able to concentrate on them."
